What could be better than having awesome neighbors who are also uniquely creative? I won the neighbor jackpot when Denise and her boyfriend, Pierce, moved into the apartment above ours! I’ll be interviewing Pierce later as well, but it’s been a great opportunity to learn more about another intuitive perspective on creativity from Denise. As a yoga teacher, she delves into connection with ourselves and others. You can tell her emphasis on alignment in life through her definition of creativity: “The ability to express your moment to moment gradient of connection with the soul and how it interacts with the world.”

She began to focus more on yoga during a time of transition in her life. She wanted to seek alignment in a way that would go beyond her daily life and wanted to gain a deeper understanding of her wellbeing and life overall. By developing better habits and listening to her body, she has allowed her creativity to evolve in new ways.

We’ll now shift over to Denise’s descriptions so we can grasp her connective philosophy.

How do you get into your flow or zone?

Denise: I practice. I use traditional methods of yoga and meditation and it takes me places and to people. It helps me connect with that guiding force inside that makes you feel more like yourself, but open to new possibilities, and settled in your purpose that day. It's quite powerful.

What are some challenges you face?

Denise: When folks expecting yoga to be something it's not. It can lead to fitness but it's not fitness. It's also challenging to teach something subtle in a world of overstimulation, noise, and disconnection. It's hard to go against the grain, but when the practice finds you or when a student resonates with you, that's the stuff, and it's everything.

How do you overcome them?

Denise: To take a quote from one of my teachers . . . little by little.

How can you ensure you are getting the best results through your journey with yoga?

Denise: Teachers in the yoga community. They help you remember your practice and who you are, and at the same time forget what is all too familiar so you can evolve. You could theoretically do yoga naked, with no mat or props, on the ground, but you need to learn and to do the practices and that can only come from a teacher.

How do you want your yoga practice to impact others?

Denise: I want folks to know health and to know that superior health and wellness are rightfully theirs. Too much force, money, and power is against this very notion.
